Which garage door opener should I choose?

For a garage attached to the house, especially under a bedroom, a belt-drive opener is the quiet choice. A chain drive is rugged and economical for detached garages and heavy doors. Regal Garage Doors installs LiftMaster openers with Wi-Fi control, keypads and battery backup, and sets the travel and force limits so the safety reverse works.

Opener Installation

  • Belt drive: the quietest option for attached garages and rooms above
  • Chain drive: rugged and economical
  • Wi-Fi and app control: open, close and check the door from your phone
  • Keypads and vehicle integration: no fumbling for a remote
  • Battery backup: keeps access during power outages

Read the guide to choosing a belt garage door opener before you decide.

The Springs Lift the Door, Not the Opener

A balanced garage door weighs only a few pounds at the handle because the springs carry its weight. The opener just guides it up and down. When an opener groans, slows down or quits partway, the cause is often a worn spring or a door out of balance, and a bigger motor will not fix that. We check the balance and the springs first, so a new opener is not wearing itself out against a door that needs a spring.

Opener Repair

Openers that run without moving the door, reverse for no reason, or stop answering the remote usually come down to a disengaged trolley, a stripped gear, a misaligned photo-eye or a logic board. We diagnose photo-eyes, travel limits, force settings and logic boards before recommending a new unit.

Repair or Replace Your Opener?

A sensor out of line, a worn gear or a remote that lost its code is usually a repair. Replacement makes more sense when the opener has no photo-eyes at all, which means it predates the safety rules that have applied to residential openers since 1993, when the same part keeps failing, or when a loud chain drive sits under a bedroom. We give you the price of both when it is close.

Test the Safety Reverse Every Month

Lay a roll of paper towels or a flat piece of wood on the floor under the door and close it. The door should touch it and reverse. Then wave something through the photo-eye beam while the door closes; it should stop and go back up. If either test fails, stop using the opener and call us. Our garage door safety guide walks through both tests.

Remotes, Keypads and Car Buttons

New remote, new keypad, or a car that forgot the door after a battery change: we program LiftMaster remotes, wall consoles and the buttons built into your car, and set a keypad code.

Garage Door Opener FAQs

Are smart openers worth it?

For convenience, security, and remote access, yes.

Belt drive or chain drive?

Belt drive is quieter and suits attached garages; chain drive is rugged and economical. We will recommend one based on your door and where the garage sits.

Does battery backup matter?

Yes. It keeps access during power outages.

Opener compatibility?

We service most major brands.

Do you program remotes and car buttons?

Yes. We program LiftMaster remotes, wall consoles, keypads and the buttons built into your car.

Why does my opener strain or stop halfway?

Often the door is out of balance or a spring is worn, so the opener is lifting weight the springs should carry. We check the springs and balance before recommending a new opener.
